If You Know Their Rules ...
You Can Play Their Games

Your countertactic

Our advice is to be honest when asked this question. Let the salesperson know your buying plans. However, make it clear that you are not committed to buying at any one dealership and that your final decision will depend on the price. Make it very clear that you intend to shop to get the best price.

Keeping You Off Price,
Most car sales training teaches the salesperson to sell the car before discussing the price. This means that when someone walks in and starts discussing the price, the salesperson needs to get the conversation off the price and onto the car. The theory is that if a salesperson can build your enthusiasm for the car and present it as the answer to all your driving needs, you are going to be easier to deal with when it comes to the negotiation.

Your countertactic
There may be times when you'll want to dispense with the preliminaries and get right to the issue of price. Open your conversation with "I just want your best price. " Most salespeople hope that they are about to make a quick sale and will start negotiating. If you have a salesperson who is good enough to try to deflect your question as illustrated above, your tactic is to simply stay focused.
