How to Buy a Used Car and
Not Get Taken

What Do You Do with the Mechanic's Report?
The information that you get from the report should help you in ay. one of four ways:

  1. It can confirm that you've got your hands on a good car and a good buy.
  2. It can make you aware that the car is unsafe, unfit, or in need of expensive repairs and should be rejected from your consideration.
  3. The information can help you in your negotiation. Depending on what is found, you might be able to use this information to help justify a lower price or, at the very least, to get the owner to agree to make the repairs as a condition of the sale.

4. A complete professional evaluation will almost certainly tell you whether or not the car will pass state inspections. If it won't, you can reasonably require the seller to make the necessary repairs to bring it up to inspection standards or, at the very least, to adjust the asking price accordingly.

5. In any event, because experts have both the knowledge and equipment to make effective evaluations, it's well worth your time and money to enlist their services.
